Catholic Young Adult Sports (CYAS) - About Us
Catholic Young Adult Sports started in April of 2010. The founder/President, Paul Spotts, had spent several years in campus ministry, but after leaving campus life, he recognized the vast need for authentic Catholic community for young adults. His ministry experience had taught him a few main things that are core to CYAS:
- Fellowship = Fun: Community at its core should be enjoyable. A fun and hospitable community is the essential to any real effort to share Christ with others.
- Kerygma = Opportunities to Grow: Kerygma is a greek word from the Bible that means "to announce." Romans 10:14 "...how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without a preacher?" Opportunites to learn about Jesus without feeling judged are crucial to getting to know Christ.
- Discipleship = Team Based Christianity: Though western culture is one of rugged individualism, Christianity has always been a team effort. Discipleship is a complex Church term that simply means "follower." In 1 Corinthians 1:11 St. Paul says, "Follow me as I follow Christ." This is "The Way", as the early Christians were called, to follow one another to Christ.
Fun: Our core events are geared to having fun! We provides year-round recreational sports leagues and social events to all young adults, both married and single, Catholic and not so Catholic. Free agents and newcomers are always welcome in CYAS, feel free to contact us for a soft introduction if you want to be introduced to someone attending an event before showing up alone.
Growth: We want you to grow with us, even if you never want to be a Catholic. We offer monthly service opportunities, annual mission trips, and small group Bible studies so you can learn more about yourself, about Jesus, and find answers about living as a Catholic.
Team Effort: Our team effort is not only on the sports field. Those looking for deeper friendships and those who want to take their faith to an adult level join our small group Bible studies and discipleship friendships. In discipleship, we walk together one-on-one as we explore the faith and challenge a peer to strive to be saintly. You must be in a CYAS Bible study to engage in a discipleship relationship through CYAS.
