Getting to Know CYAS Spiritual Advisor
Brother Mairesean is a Brother of the Community of Saint John and took on the role of Spiritual Advisor for CYAS a year ago. Brother Mairesean became involved with CYAS during wiffleball season in October 2015. He also played basketball and ultimate Frisbee with CYAS, having a true passion for basketball. In fact, he claims "basketball is God's favorite sport." He enjoys basketball because it combines athletics and intelligence in fast-paced situations. He defines it as a beautiful, spontaneous, unchoreographed dance. Through his involvement in CYAS sports, he came to know Paul Spotts, the founder of CYAS. Paul had been searching and praying for a Spiritual Advisor for CYAS, and Brother Mairesean was the perfect fit.
Brother Mairesean has served as a chaplain in many different academic settings, but being a spiritual advisor for an organization like CYAS was unfamiliar territory for him. He entered into this new role describing himself as a "spiritual catalyst." He wanted to keep a low-key profile until he was asked to do things. His first task as the CYAS spiritual advisor was to travel to Nicaragua to help with the missionary trip. He had never been to Nicaragua before, and since this was his first time serving as the spiritual advisor for the group, he was faced with many situations he never experienced before. He knew he would help with communion services as a deacon, but outside those set responsibilities, his role was undefined. He said he wanted to be with the group as a brother, in the broad sense of the term. He wanted to engage and interact with the missionaries as a peer. When asked about his favorite part of the trip, he could not pick out just one aspect of it. He enjoyed the quality time with the missionaries, his stay with a group of Brothers, playing games with the children he met in the villages, celebrating communion, and handing out school supplies. He especially noticed the spirit of community in some of the villages.
After returning from Nicaragua, Brother Mairesean continues to learn and grow in his new role as spiritual advisor. He remains active in CYAS sports. He loves sports and all they entail – playing, competing, and just being around people. He likes being a part of CYAS because he can play sports with like-minded people who are there to support each other on their journeys with Jesus Christ. Brother Mairesean is excited for his future as the CYAS Spiritual Advisor, but also excited about continuing to participate in the various sports it offers and hopefully win a championship.
